Sculpture 94'-95', these seven works gestated over a period of two years in part due to my available Art time (that damn day job) and in part due to access (or lack of ) to The McMaster Foundry. Although these works rely heavily on bronze I look at them more as multi-media pieces that developed through the integration and assimilation of their various elements. They relate in theme to my other works of this time period in their juxtaposition of natural and manmade elements through the use of various symbols.
"Every Beginning" was executed in my last year at The Ontario College of Art. I like to think of it as my thesis if such a thing exists in art school. The idea was to create a work that involved the audience as more than just a viewer but as a participant in the compositional arrangement of the work. Out of this labour of love grew "Brunch", which developed as a solution to the short comings of every Beginning. ( Too imposing, heavy, ackward ). I wanted (for that matter still want) to create a work that was more comfortable to be a part of hence the idea of a dinning room table that was equally sculptural as it was functional in that everyday ritual of breaking the bread amongst family and friends.
